The much-anticipated Walter Jobson Collection has concluded at Burns & Co Auctions, bringing to a close an extraordinary four-part auction showcasing a lifetime dedicated to collecting.
At 94 years of age, Walter began collecting more than six decades ago, sharing the passion with his late wife as together they amassed an extensive collection of petrol and oil memorabilia, automotive collectables, advertising signs, petrol pumps, oil bottles, tins, toys, telephones and much more.
Offered genuinely and unreserved across four nights, the collection attracted strong interest from collectors around Australia, with the total result exceeding $1 million including Buyer’s Premium.

An incredible $90,287 result leads the way
The standout result of the collection was Lot 756, the superb original embossed enamel Ask for Waratah Motor Spirit sign.
Regarded in the catalogue as one of the country’s best embossed enamel signs and presented in outstanding condition with no repairs or touch-ups, the sign sold for $90,287.50 including Buyer’s Premium after reaching a $77,500 hammer price.
It wasn’t the only exceptional result.
The ALBA Motor Spirit embossed enamel sign achieved $46,600 inc. BP, while two highly desirable Independent Oil Industries pieces – the Purr Star Motor Oil rack sign and Resis Motor Oil rack sign – realised $40,775 and $36,464.50 inc. BP respectively.
Part 3 produced another major result when an Original Golden Fleece Light Box with Acrylic Ram sold for $32,037.50 inc. BP.
Also attracting significant attention was the extraordinary NOS Golden Plume House Milk Glass Petrol Pump Canteen, still housed in its original cardboard box, which realised $25,338.75 inc. BP
