Built from the ground up in 2002 this 1902 English Mechanic replica is a credit to the builder. Purchased by the Mcfeeters from Syd Norman of Alligator Creek, Syd had built the car solely on paper plans dating back to the start of the 20th century. The history of the vehicle is as follows: As a result of an 1899 competition “To design a practical motorcar that the ‘man of moderate means’ could build “, The English Mechanic and World of Science’ Magazine published plans for engineer Thomas Hyler Whyte’s English Mechanic motorcar. The idea was for a car to be built mostly from parts that were available and Hyler Whyte gave advice where such parts could be found. Over the next couple of years, amateur builders submitted to the magazine their suggested improvements on the original design or modifications they had made to circumvent problems. Thus the English Mechanic was never a particular model as such but rather, an unknown number of vehicles that sprang from an original idea. Syd Norman of Alligator Creek, engineer and member of the Mackay Vintage Motor club had always wanted a veteran car and after reading of the English Mechanic in Geogano’s ‘The New Encyclopaedia of Motorcars’, decided to build his own! Syd wrote to the National Museum at Beaulieu and, in return for English pounds, was able to obtain copies of the original articles from 1900 until 2002. Following sifting through the various article and enlarging the various drawings, body plans etc, Syd set about building his car. Almost everything was built from scratch, sprockets have been machined, gearbox casings fabricated and appropriate chain obtained for the chain drive. This is a terrific example of an early motorcar and would be ideal for a museum or private collection. A comprehensive folder of paperwork, correspondence and the original drawings are also No attempt to start. This vehicle has been registered on Club Permit as a 1902 vehicle. Measures 2500mm length, 1350mm width 1550 height.
