The 1931 Ford Model A 400-A (often referred to as the A-400) is a rare, high-end convertible sedan introduced in May 1931 as part of Ford’s Deluxe line. It was designed as a “halo” model for the final year of Model A production to provide the open-air experience of a convertible with the structural rigidity and comforts of a closed sedan.
Only 4,864 to 5,093 units were produced in 1931, making it one of the rarest of all Model A body styles. One of the unique design features of this model was it featured rigid pillars and a top rail that remained in place when the canvas top was lowered, eliminating the typical squeaks and rattles of the Deluxe Roadster. Standard equipment typically included Deluxe cowl lamps, a left-side spare wheel well, chrome windshield frame and wipers, and sometimes a rear luggage rack.
The interior was designed for comfort, featuring genuine leather upholstery, simulated walnut wood-grained dash and window mouldings, fully carpeted interiors, and rear armrests.
The car used the standard Model A 201 cubic-inch, 40-horsepower inline-four engine with a three-speed sliding-gear manual transmission.
It is widely believed the name “400” was derived from the “400” social register of the time, symbolizing a high-class, exclusive vehicle.
This example is in stand out condition having undergone a no expense spared restoration. Inspections will not disappoint and it would be a valued addition to any early for collection.
