1577 1936 VLD 1200cc.S.V. were manufactured in 1936. The A J.G.Murphy heavy duty sidecar with brake was manufactured in N.S.W. The vendor is the second owner having purchased it from the estate of Stan Watson in 1972. The vendor recalls having been fascinated by it since 1964 when he first saw it idling away at a local Milk Bar in Glen Iris in Melbourne. He pursued Stan from the age of 18. His Harley had an industrial box which carried his tools of trade being paint and ladders, the sidecar currently on the bike was sitting in his shed unused for 30 years but fortunately he refused to sell it using the excuse that he intended to swap the box for the chair on his retirement and take his wife touring. After acquiring the bike he was amazed at the number of people he had promised it to over the years. In 1973 the restoration began, there was little in the way of parts and expertise compared to todays treasure trove of information via the internet, undaunted he commenced the task which took 5 years to complete as an apprentice in the trade of Fitting and Machining and post apprenticeship in Toolmaking with P.B.R. Industrial. Co. a Division of REPCO Pty Ltd. With the vast wealth of expertise, knowledge and interest shown toward the project by colleagues and the company allowing him to use the extensive facilities to rebuild the Harley all was greatly appreciated. The following work was carried out during the restoration, alloy Tool Steels used extensively to replace bearing, axles and gears, extensive helicoiling of threads, crack testing of stressed engine parts, frame and sidecar chassis requiring replacement chassis springs and frame repair, most engine parts remanufactured, incorporating seals where feasible [gearbox totally oil tight], carby ,generator, coil, speedo and speedo drive all rebuilt. The painting was done by Vic and Roy Bogner and upholstery was all redone with leather and horse hair padding by master saddler Roger Hensby. The bike is offered with a four leading shoe front break which I believe offers a safer alternative to the original setup which is also part of this sale. The vendor has a considerable number of spare parts, literature and original sales brochures which is available for sale to the purchaser.
