1960’s 500cc J.A.P. engined Midget Speedway Car, fitted with a triumph gearbox, runs on methanol, magneto has spark, not started since early 1980’s, raced locally in 1960’s by the vendors farther and has remained in the same family since.

In 1960, 500cc speedway cars generally referred to TQ (Three-Quarter) Midgets or micro-midgets. These were highly popular open-wheel dirt track cars, designed around lightweight motorcycle engines.

Unlike modern full-cage USAC or Formula 500s, these classic 500cc machines often lacked roll cages, wings, or front brakes—making them a raw and dangerous thrill.

In 1960, 500cc JAP (J.A.Prestwich) engines were highly sought after to power “Midget” (or Speedcar) racing cars and lightweight Formula III open-wheelers. These methanol-tuned, single-cylinder powerplants produced around 33 – 45 bhp, making them perfect for lightweight dirt track racing. The JAP 500cc was the absolute benchmark for dirt track racing, prized for its explosive torque and ability to hold high RPMs in constant-drift turns.
