Holden EH Premier, Portsea blue, matching numbers with the books and in tip top condition.
This 1964 EH Holden Premier is a carefully restored example of one of Holden’s most admired Australian classics, finished in its original and highly desirable Portsea Blue with Ivory White colour combination. Combining matching-numbers provenance, long-term enthusiast ownership, extensive records and a high-quality restoration, it presents as a turn-key Premier ready for club runs, weekend cruising or pride of place in a considered Holden collection.
Originally purchased by Edward T Mackay of Shepparton from M. Doonan & Son GMH Dealers in Mooroopna, this EH Premier carries clear early provenance. The history file includes the original owner’s manual and records, along with extensive records from the current owner’s 15 years of ownership and the previous owner. The car has been used sparingly, driven only on club runs since 2011, garaged, kept for dry-weather outings and supported by records of every outing since 2015, as well as mechanical work dating back to 2005.
The car has matching numbers throughout, with the numbers matching the owner’s manual purchase record. The odometer is showing 79,060 miles, consistent with its life as a carefully kept limited-use classic.
The current owner purchased the car in 2011 and steadily improved it before extensive restoration in 2017, including disassembly, a high-quality 2-pac respray in the original colours, new Rare Spares nuts, bolts, rubbers and replacement parts, sound deadening, new carpet and reupholstering in faultless-quality Italian leather. Attention to detail during restoration included fresh paint and leather trim to the centre console, restoration and powder coating of the seat frames prior to upholstering, flexi-paint colour-matched dash bumper, restored arm rests and passenger handles and double gold plated / hand painted restoration of the premier badges. A high-end Alpine stereo was then fitted with hands-free bluetooth connection and CD player. The front speakers are mounted inside the original radio grille, avoiding cuts to the new original-matched door liners, while the rear parcel rack speakers, boot-mounted amplifier and modest sub-woofer are neatly integrated.
Prior to the body restoration minor rust and dent repairs were carried out as well as an automatic transmission overhaul, full front end steering kit replacement, shock absorbers, bushes, engine mounts, tyres, brakes, servicing to the doors, locks and windows. The exhaust system has been upgraded to a two-inch system for full breathing to get the most out of the refurbished original Stromberg. More recently a Bosch alternator conversion has replaced the original generator and a new battery has been fitted. The original generator is supplied, and the car has an original factory-fitted Nasco heater and this is complemented by (2017) custom-made Hemco seatbelts colour-matched to the tan upholstery.
The engine bay has been detailed and tidied while retaining some original patina. The original engine is described as strong, quiet, robust and reliable. The car is accompanied by its original owner’s manual, warranty card, service book and Nasco catalogue, all retained in their original pouch and all in good condition. An original workshop manual and maintenance manual will also be supplied.
The original Victorian number plates may be available to Victorian buyers (sold unregistered) and an extensive photographic record of the restoration as well as a professional photo shoot in 2018 is available.
All the hard work has been done. This EH Holden Premier remains largely original in character but has been restored and thoughtfully upgraded to be enjoyed with confidence, reliability and style.
