If pedigree and provenance is important to you, then hold tight and have a read! The Original Owner’s background Milos Jan Pelikan (1926-2024) – Born Prague, Czechoslovakia came to Australia in 1950 as a student refugee from Czechoslovakia studying Agriculture. He was one of many persecuted by the regime, his father (Rudolf Pelikan) was a General (& Surgeon) , one of 16 who contributed to forming of nation Czechoslovakia in WW1. His father was recruited by the first President, T.G. Masaryk. He was Military Medical Commander of the military school after WW1. Upon Milos’ arrival in Melbourne, he worked on wharves in Port Melbourne for about 10yrs. Following that he got a job with the Australian Government in Papua New Guinea(then Territory of Papua New Guinea) in 1963 as a Land Surveyor for Dept Lands, Surveys & Mines located in Konedobu, Port Moresby, PNG. This was Administration HQ for Australian Government. He worked his way up the ranks and became Principal Land Development Officer for PNG. 1972 PNG was granted Self-Government status and was asked by Chief Minister Michael Somare to stay on in his Government ( within Lands Dept) and assist PNG on the road to Independence in 1975. This was an honour as it was a time when positions were being transferred to local PNG people. Michael Somare became first Prime Minister and Milos headed the Land Settlement Division but also worked with Natural Resources Dept. Milos and his family left PNG in 1976.
Milos purchased the bike on the 19/3/1974. The motorcycle was registered and used prior to Independence and was mainly used in Port Moresby where he lived in a suburb called Boroko – there was a huge sports field near there where the children rode it. Upon the family’s return to Australia in 1976 it was stored at the family home near the Tweed River, NSW and then onto the next family home in Melbourne. The daughter of the original owner has advised us that it is a very original example not having been touched since the 1970s. What an opportunity to secure such a great motorcycle with a rich and fascinating history.
