BTH MAGNETO TYPE AS-1
Made in Coventry, ENGLAND Aircraft starting magneto #E23.
Large vintage aircraft engines (1920s, ’30s, and ’40s) required a high-energy spark to ignite fuel and start rotating, but the primary engine-driven magnetos could not generate a strong enough spark at the slow speeds of manual hand-cranking.The BTH ASl solved this by acting as an independent, hand-operated generator. Mounted inside the cockpit or on the fuselage exterior, a pilot or ground crew member would vigorously crank the AS1 handle by hand. This mechanical rotation forced high-tension (HT) electrical current through a dedicated starter circuit, feeding a continuous stream of intense sparks directly to the engine’s distributor block to fire the cylinders and kickstart the engine.
