I am glad I went through Burns & Co as this is the easiest way to do it.

… and I now wouldn’t sell any other way.

The April Burns & Co Classic and Collectable Car auction saw some very competitive bidding throughout the day, including on lot 30, the classic 1967 Holden HR Premier.
After some spirited bidding the hammer fell on this impressive turquoise sedan for the price of $45,278 (including buyer’s premium) leading to a happy seller (and we are sure buyer also). We spoke to the vendor post the auction to get his thoughts on the sale, the process from start to finish and why they chose Burns and Co, and this is what he said.

“I was considering selling my car and heard about the upcoming Holden Museum Auction and that Burns & Co were handling that. So I looked you up and went from there. The whole set up was brilliant, and everything was spotless right down to the floors. The marketing was great. The Video of the car with the music was great, and the photos were beautiful. Everything was really well done.

I actually watched the auction all day. It was very good to watch and when the car came up the whole family gathered around to watch. The auctioneering was brilliant. Everything that was said about the car was spot on, and it highlighted how good the car was, and helped me get a great result.

The staff were really good. Debbie was great at front office, she explained everything I needed to know, and made it all very smooth for me. And Anton got back every time I rang or had a question, and he also rang me on the day to make sure everything was ok.

I was a bit worried at first how things would go given this was the first time I have sold at auction. I have sold online before and it sometimes feels like people just come to have a free drive of your classic car. I was sick of the ‘tyre kickers’ and handling things this way so I decided to give Burns & Co a try. I am glad I did as this is the easiest way to do it, and I now wouldn’t sell any other way. I didn’t have to do anything, the car was towed there and left with the team, I got a great result, and everything went very smooth.

I would recommend Burns & Co to others no doubt. In fact I have another car I am now considering selling, and I am also looking at a few bikes I might like to buy in the upcoming Burns & Co motorcycle auction.” – Peter (April 2024)

Collection of cups, trophies and memorabilia of renowned Horse Trainer George Hanlon to go under the hammer

By What's News

With a collection of trainer’s trophies, plates, memorabilia and other racing collectables previously owned by renowned trainer George Hanlon going under the hammer at Burns and Co, we thought it only fitting to take a closer look at the history of one of Australia’s finest horse trainers.

Burns & Co Auctions are excited to announce the forthcoming auction of horse racing trophies and memorabilia of horse racing icon, legendary horse trainer, and Australian Racing Hall of Famer George Hanlon. Details of the auction are still being finalised but early information can be found here.

The internet is littered with stories of Hanlon’s career and tributes to him as one of Australia’s finest horse trainers. One such quote was from fellow trainer Robert Smerdon in a Herald Sun article on Hanlon following his death in 2010.

“His success in the 1970s and 1980s was amazing. He was competing with the likes of (Colin) Hayes, (Tommy) Smith and Cummings with only a fraction of the horses they had and beating them,” he said.

“In terms of his success with what he had, he could even rate above them. That’s how good he was.”

Hanlon started out his training career in McLarenvale in South Australia following on from the lead of his brother Fred who had some success training trotters. George Hanlon’s first winner, a horse by the name of Lourdes, came at Port Pirie in 1946. The win kick started what was to be a truly remarkable career. It’s also speculated that as a result of staging a betting coup with the then relatively unknown Lourdes, that the money won that day bought Hanlon’s first house and stables at the Epsom at Mordialloc.

In 65 years as a trainer Hanlon built an amazing record. Even at the age of 85, he trained a Melbourne Cup placegetter: eight-year-old Mr Prudent, who finished second to Media Puzzle in the unforgettable 2002 Melbourne Cup that inspired the movie ‘The Cup’.

Hanlon also trained Diatribe to win the 2000 Caulfield Cup, conquering a race that to that point had been a hoodoo event for him, with Diatribe winning in a time that still stands as a track record for 2400m at Caulfield over 20 years later. To add to the tale, Hanlon fell down some steps before the Caulfield Cup and famously received the trophy with his head bandaged.

Then there was the famous Melbourne Cup. Hanlon qualified 50 Melbourne Cup runners in 40 years and won the Melbourne Cup on three occasions with Piping Lane in 1972, Arwon in 1978 and Black Knight 1984.

Few trainers can boast a record like Hanlon’s – 37 Group 1s and 100 stakes wins. On top of those already mentioned he won a number of other well known races such as the Cox Plate (Family Of Man 1977); two Newmarket Handicaps (Correct 1960-61); the AJC Derby (Taras Bulba 1974), the Sydney Cup (Mr Prudent 2001); the Doncaster Handicap (Lawman 1981); the Australian Cup (Kip 1982) and four Adelaide Cups (Gnapur 1969, Amarant 1983, Our Pompeii 1993-94), as well as many other country and regional cups and races.

Details of the auction of the George Hanlon Collection are still being finalised but early information on the Auction can be found here.

First Entry Rolls in for our May Burns & Co Classic Car Auction

By What's News

And what a beauty!!!!

This White 1927 Rolls Royce Phantom 1 with burgundy guards and a black vinyl covered roof will be a feature entry in the 5th May Burns & Co Classic Car Auction.

The chauffeur’s cockpit is trimmed in brown leather with tan carpets. There is an openable glass division separating the driver from passengers. The passenger cabin has a beige cloth trim with matching headlining, carpets, and ornate features. The back carriage has two-fold out seats to allow for additional passengers. A large rear trunk provides storage for luggage. Seating 7+ passengers very comfortably (2+ in the front, 5+ in the back) this large and roomy car has hosted many special events.

An exceedingly rare find, this car would be a collectors dream to own. In immaculate condition, after an extensive overhaul around 2020/2021 this timeless Rolls runs beautifully. With invoices and paperwork detailing its full restoration, including rebuilt engine, clutch, gearbox, new tyres, paintwork, and detailing. It also comes with full log books and other details of ownership.

Well recognised among car enthusiasts for its historical significance and provenance (see provenance section below), this Phantom 1 has been featured in Rolls Royce magazines, MotorClassica, and has also taken out many awards.

Whether you are after a classic car for weekend drives, touring, as a club car, as a savvy investment, or to hire out for special events, this Phantom 1 in outstanding condition will be perfect for any occasion.

With the owners getting older they have reluctantly decided to part with this stunning Rolls Royce which provides bidders with a rare opportunity to own a piece of motoring history.

Keep an eye on the May Classic Car Auction webpage for more details.

Provenance:

This Rolls Royce Phantom 1 was purchased brand new by AE Ansell of Ansell Brewing in Birmingham (UK). It arrived in Australia in 1934 and was rebodied by Martin & King in 1935 from a Hooper cabriolet body to a 7-seat limousine with division. It was used as a taxi by City Motor Service until 1940 – a highlight from this time was convoying the visiting English Cricket Team on their Ashes tour in 1936/37.

The Phantom 1 limousine was fitted with P-100 headlamps and sent to Tasmania where it was owned by the schoolmaster at Launceston Church Grammar School. The registration was cancelled in the 1950s and the vehicle partially dismantled.

The car was purchased by its current owner in 2013. Since then, it has been restored and meticulously maintained by Derby Works. This Phantom 1 is a comfortable, reliable, and impressive club car. In recent years it has completed the 20-Ghost National Rally to Mount Gambier, as well as around 4000 miles of rallies back to Tasmania, Canberra, and locally to Nagambie. This tour-ready pre-war Rolls Royce has great provenance and is always going to be a bit special.

Another happy Burns & Co Vendor

By What's News
The whole company and the selling process was very professional, the process was very smooth, and nothing was a problem. When I called, I could easily get to speak to the same person. Where can you find that these days? I deal with a lot of different types of companies, and you can’t.
The February Burns & Co Classic and Collectable Car auction saw some very competitive bidding throughout the day, including on lot 65, the stunning red 1970 XW GT-HO Phase 2 Tribute Utility.
After many bids back and forth the hammer fell on this impressive Ute for the price of $123,088 (including buyer’s premium) leading to not only I am sure a happy new purchaser, but also a happy seller. We spoke to the vendor post the auction to get his thoughts on the sale, the process from start to finish and why they chose Burns and Co, and this is what he said.
“I found out about Burns & Co by word of mouth from some friends who had sold through them previously. I was very happy with the setup and organisation in the lead up, and was updated regularly during which was appreciated, and that led to a great result.

I think that the online bidding got the ball rolling as far as the bidding goes and it got people interested in bidding at the auction.

I will definitely be recommending Burns and Co to others. I have a couple of guys I know who are looking to sell and I will be recommending them to call Burns & Co. One of the biggest advantages of selling with Burns & Co was not needing to deal with all the Riff Raff that you can get selling things privately.

It’s not just the Burns & Co Vendors who are happy.

The Buyers are too!

A flight to Newcastle, an auction and a new Sandman. Hear about the journey of one of the buyers from the February Classic Car auction.

I had a great and pleasant experience, I would absolutely purchase through Burns and Co again or recommend you to others.”
The February Burns & Co Classic and Collectable Car auction saw some very competitive bidding throughout the day, including on lot 54, an often sought after HZ Sandman Panel Van situated in our Newcastle / Central Coast facility.
In among the crowd of floor bidders at our Bayswater showroom was a bidder by the name of Troy who has been seeking a Sandman for a while and was very keen to get his hands on this particular Sandman. Having flown up to Newcastle to view the car, and having never bought a car at auction, it’s fair to say he was a little bit nervous.
Once the lot came up though Troy jumped into the bidding headfirst and came out as the successful bidder and the proud new owner of a Sandman. We spoke to Troy post the auction to get his thoughts on the sale, the process from start to finish and his thoughts on purchasing with Burns and Co, and this is what he said.

“I first found out about Burns & Co from the Internet and on Facebook. I have been looking to buy a Sandman for a while and so have been keeping an eye out and spotted this one on Facebook.I have never bid at Auction before, so I was very nervous and didn’t take it all in, but I found it awesome. It was like going to a car show, just watching on was entertaining.

Once I had seen the auction on Facebook I went to the website and viewed the images and videos and went through all of the information which was great. But the best thing for me was the service I got from Michael when I went to view the car. All the Burns & Co staff were really good. They were really friendly and welcoming, and they made everything easy and smooth. It was all done for you. But I was really impressed with Michael (Saide) when I flew to Newcastle to view the car. He picked me up from the airport and answered all my questions, and even gave me advice on things to do in Newcastle while I waited for my flight home.

I had a great and pleasant experience, I would absolutely purchase through Burns and Co again or recommend you to others.”
