Rare Kangaroo Petroleum Co 4 Gallon Tin makes $12,815

In what was one of highest ever (if not the highest ever) prices achieved for a 4 Gallon Drum in Australia this superb Kangaroo Petroleum drum last night sold for an impressive $12,815. With the price sitting around the $9,000 mark at the conclusion of the pre-bidding period it was clear that this was an item with a number of bidders interested in it.

Kangaroo Petroleum only operated for 4 years (1959-1963) and were only situated in very limited locations on the Eastern Side of the country, meaning these drums and other items with Kangaroo Petroleum branding are quite rare and so often are quite highly sought after.

That interest in the drum only continued once the live bidding on the drum kicked off as part of our Wednesday 5th of November Next Level Collectors Auction. With a number of bids continuing to flood in on this highly desirable drum it saw the bidding climb up to the final price of $12,815. $4,310 was the second highest selling lot for the evening with a restored Ampol Wayne AS70 Electric Petrol Pump yielding that price. Rounding out the top three, and not far beyond was another restored petrol pump, this time a Golden Fleece AS70 which went for $3,844.

With Cars and Motorcycles continuing to flood through the doors of both the Bayswater and Newcastle / Central Coast Burns & Co Auctions facilities the November Muscle, Classic & Collectable Car & Motorcycle Auction will again be held over three nights!

Monday the 10th of November will be night 1 with the first lot going under the hammer at the bidder friendly time of 6pm AEDT. Then on the Tuesday evening we will see night 2, again kicking off from 6pm AEDT and the Wednesday night will round out the auction with night 3. Bidders can bid online, via phone, absentee bidding forms or you can attend and bid in person at 4 Market Drive, Bayswater Vic, 3153 from 6pm AEDT each night.

With 110 lots featuring Cars, Motorcycles and selected memorabilia in the catalogues this auction again shapes to be a massive three nights. As is always the case for the Burns & Co auctions, whether you are after Aussie Muscle, an all-time favourite classic, an American, European or Asian icon, a motorcycle or an entry level club car, there is sure to be something to suit your taste.

Burns and Co have a history of offering up some excellent Aussie classic and muscle cars, and this is again the case in their November Auctions with a great selection available including Fords like a XW GTHO Phase II, XY Falcon (Ex Police), XF Panel Van, FPV Super Pursuit Ute and an XD Fairmont Ghia. For the Holden lovers there are models like Two VL SS Group A’s (one a Plus Pack), Two HDT VC Brocks, HX LE and HK Monaros, UC Torana (LX Tribute), 48-215 FX, EH and EJ Specials, HD Special & HG Kingswood Wagons, HD Special X2 Sedan, HQ Kingswood, HZ Premier, FE Ambulance, SV5000, two GTO HSV Coupes, VZ SS (Ex Police), VE & VF (Wagon) Clubsports; VK, VL, VN, VP and VS Commodores, and an Adventura. Come and join the Burns & Co team!

Burns & Co Auctions have rapidly become a household name in the classic and collectable automotive auction space since putting our footprint into Bayswater, Vic in 2019 where we have recently expanded and improved our auctions rooms. We have also recently expanded into new premises in Beresfield, via Newcastle in N.S.W. where our state of the art facilities position us as one of the market leaders in the Muscle, Classic and Collectable car and motorbike auction field.

Our rapid growth has bought about the need for an additional staff member to join our growing Melbourne auto team, and answering to our auto manager where tasks in the role will include (but are not limited to) coordinating receival and dispatch of cars and motorcycles into/out of our facility, preparing vehicles for cataloguing and photography, meeting and greeting clients and contactors, developing of valuation skills, attending to the show floor during viewing times and attend auctions as needed.

This is an opportunity for the successful applicant to contribute to the organisations day to day processes and ultimately keep the whole business operating smoothly. This full-time role is based in our Bayswater, VIC facility.

Next Level Collectors Auction – TOP 5 RESULTS

That’s a wrap on our Next Level Collectors Auction. It was great to have so many floor, online, phone & absentee bidders.

The highest selling lot was a Superb Original Huddart Parker & Co Steam to Melbourne & Geelong Pictorial Enamel Sign which sold for $14,679. Coming in at second place was an Original Golden Fleece Duo Light Box which went on to sell for $8,155. The Original Enamel Die Cut Pegasus Sign rounded out the top three best sellers within this auction reaching a final price of $3,378.

The Superb Original Michelin Man Double Sided Dealership Hanging Light Box was the fourth best seller reaching a final price of $3,145 and the Original Screen Print Goodyear Tyres 3T With Exclusive Tyre Cord Metal Dealership Sign was the fifth best seller reaching a price of $2,330.

Newcastle Facility going from strength to strength

It’s been a big first 5 months for our Beresfield via Newcastle facility!

From the time the rubber hit the road in late April when we appointed Phil Shaw as the new manager, and soon after opened the doors to our new Craftsman Close, Beresfield showroom, things have continued to grow. Very quickly we needed some extra assistance and were delighted to be able to appoint Angela Russell into an Administration role to assist with the influx of work being experienced. As you can see from the figures below and the top Newcastle sales from our October Muscle, Classic & Collectable Car & Motorcycle Auction, things have gone from strength to strength, and we cannot wait to see what the rest of 2025, and 2026 hold for Burns & Co Newcastle!

Burns & Co are excited to be a Level 2 Sponsor / Supporting Partner for this year’s RAA Bay to Birdwood event which is being held this Sunday the 19th October. This is our first year as a sponsor of this event and as not only a business with many staff with a long history in the car industry, but as Car lovers ourselves, it is fair to say we cannot wait to get across to Adelaide for this one.

The iconic Bay to Birdwood event sees thousands of South Australians and automotive enthusiasts from across the country gather to celebrate automotive history. Attendees will witness an impressive parade of over 1,500 historic vehicles along the scenic 67-kilometre route, departing Barratt Reserve for the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, nestled in the Adelaide Hills.

Is this the best example of a VL SS Group A Plus Pack in Australia?

If it isn’t it has to be right up there!!!

Known for their rarity and collectability, especially the Plus Pack models, its racing pedigree, and its iconic status as Peter Brock’s last HDT car. The 1986 Holden VL Commodore SS Group had only 500 examples made and only 173 of those came out with the ‘Plus Packs’ making these cars are a true Aussie collector piece.

One for the collectors.

This Genuine 1986 Holden VL Commodore SS Group A Plus Pack is an exceptional example and it’s  hard to fault. Build number 279 out of 500 it comes with the Plus Pack option, the Polarizer, a manual 5 speed transmission, the original books, compendium, build sheet, and it has a miserly 61,900 Kms on the clock. And to top it all off, it’s condition is A1. We think that this could possibly be the best example in Australia! This one really needs to be seen to be believed.

The car presents near new and is very original. It features immaculate original Acrylic paint with only the front and rear bumpers and side skirts being repainted many years ago. This car was sent to John Sheppard (ex HDT Manager) by the first owner and had the engine stroked to a 344ci and camshaft fitted.

If condition is important then you don’t want to let this one pass you by.
