Vendor Story: The Right Presentation Delivers For XB Fairmont Wagon Vendor

Another strong seller result was achieved in Night 1 of the Burns & Co May Muscle, Classic & Collectable Car & Motorcycle Auction, with the 1975 Ford XB Fairmont 302 V8 7 Seater Automatic Wagon selling for $59,346 including buyer’s premium.

Offered as Lot 14, the XB Fairmont Wagon was a unique and highly presentable example, finished in Tango with white interior and featuring a long list of desirable options. Factory 302 V8, Fairmont specification, T-bar automatic, power steering, air conditioning, GS rally pack, power windows, power tailgate, LSD, overriders and a dealer-fit rear dickie seat all added to the appeal of this standout wagon.

For seller Leonard, Burns & Co was the right fit for the vehicle because of the way the team presents cars to market.

Rather than a single headline vehicle, the April auction is defined by depth and variety, with a strong selection of highly desirable collector cars across multiple segments.

Leading the line-up is a rare 1970 Ford XW GT-HO Phase 1.5, a genuine and highly sought-after “in-between” homologation model with matching numbers and strong provenance. Holden performance is equally well represented, highlighted by a 1985 HDT VK SS Group A “Blue Meanie”, a genuine early-build 1986 VL SS Group A (Build No. 008), and a range of other Brock-era and HSV vehicles.

The catalogue also features standout international and custom offerings, including a 1953 Jaguar C-Type Recreation, a supercharged 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback, and a 1976 Porsche 911, appealing to both traditional collectors and enthusiasts seeking something unique.

The June catalogue delivers one of the strongest and most diverse offerings of Australian muscle, collector vehicles, motorcycles and motoring memorabilia seen this year, with buyers presented a rare opportunity to secure everything from blue-chip investment vehicles and concours-quality restorations through to affordable classics, survivor cars and unique collector pieces.

Leading the opening night is an exceptional line-up of Australian muscle headlined by a genuine matching-numbers 1969 Ford Falcon GT-HO Phase 1 finished in Candy Apple Red. Family-owned since 1983 and supported by extensive provenance including ICAARS and ACCHS documentation, the GT-HO is undoubtedly one of the standout collector vehicles of the year.

Joining the GT-HO is a remarkable 1972 Holden HQ GTS 308 Coupe. Finished in rare Lime Green Metallic and retained by a single owner from new, this matching-numbers example has remained tucked away for more than three decades and presents as an exceptional survivor vehicle complete with original books and documentation and unreserved from the outset.

Holden enthusiasts are particularly well catered for throughout the sale. Another major highlight is the extensively restored 1976 Holden LX SS Torana Hatchback owned by former apprentice Frank and featuring a 308 V8 personally built by legendary engine builder Ian Tate OAM. The August/September catalogue brings together another outstanding selection of Australian muscle, blue-chip collector vehicles, American classics and performance cars, prestige marques, vintage and collectable motorcycles and motoring memorabilia, with headline vehicles spanning some of the most recognisable names in Australian and international motoring.

Leading the catalogue is a significant piece of Australian Ford history – the final saleable standard-specification FGX Falcon XR6 Turbo Ute built by Ford Australia.

The 2016 Ford FGX XR6 Turbo Ute rolled off the production line on 29th July 2016 and is finished in Smoke Metallic with black trim. Factory manual and showing just 3,340 kilometres, it is accompanied by a Ford Australia Certificate of Authenticity and its original owner’s manual, which records Ford Motor Company as the original owner. With the end of Australian Ford manufacturing now firmly part of our motoring history, this represents a rare opportunity to acquire a vehicle with exceptional provenance and a direct connection to the final chapter of locally produced Falcon utilities.

Australian muscle is a major feature throughout the catalogue, with Holden collectors presented with an impressive selection of Toranas, HSVs, Monaros and other performance models.

Among the headline offerings is a 1975 Holden LH Torana SL/R 5000, a factory L31/M21 V8 manual example finished in highly desirable Barbados Green with Slate Black trim. Built in Melbourne in May 1975, the tightly held example comes from a private Victorian collection and is currently fitted with a V8 sourced from a VK Group A SS.

Joining it is a striking 1976 Holden Torana LX SS Hatchback, now powered by a stroked 355 V8 and paired with a TKO 500 five-speed manual. Originally produced as a six-cylinder manual LX SS in Papaya, the car has undergone a quality restoration and now presents in white and black with an extensive list of mechanical and chassis upgrades including a nine-inch differential, A9X-style braking setup, Koni suspension and widened GTS wheels.

The later Holden performance era is represented by a 2013 HSV VF GTS, Build Number 201. Finished in Sting Red and showing 49,385 kilometres, the two-owner example is powered by the supercharged 6.2-litre LSA V8 and has been further enhanced with extractors, upgraded injectors, supercharger pulley, harmonic balancer and performance camshaft, producing a reported 405kW at the rear wheels.

Ford enthusiasts have plenty more to choose from, including an outstanding 1978 Ford XC Fairmont Coupe finished in factory Platinum Blue with Houndstooth Ginger interior.

Originally equipped with a matching-number factory 351 V8, the Fairmont has undergone a no-expense-spared full restoration and extensive performance build. Its 351 has been stroked to 408ci and equipped with CHI alloy heads, hydraulic roller cam, eight-throttle-body EFI and a host of supporting upgrades, producing a reported 560hp and 550lb-ft of torque. Brembo brakes, a nine-inch Truetrac rear end and custom billet wheels complete what is an exceptionally presented Australian Ford coupe.

The catalogue also delivers a substantial selection of American muscle and classics, headed by several particularly impressive Chevrolet, Dodge and Ford offerings.

A standout is a 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray LT-1 350 V8 Manual Convertible, presented in War Bonnet Yellow with Saddle trim. Imported into Australia in 2006, the Corvette is accompanied by its import paperwork and approval, VASS certificate, US title, owner’s manual and supporting documentation. The high-revving LT-1 350 small-block, four-speed manual specification and final-year chrome-bumper styling make this an especially appealing C3, while both its folding soft top and removable hard top are included.

Also attracting attention is a beautifully presented 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS 350 V8 four-speed manual finished in Tripoli Turquoise. The long-term-owned car underwent a documented subframe-off restoration in the United States approximately a decade ago, including a rebuild of its original matching-number engine. Equipped with the Rally Sport Package, factory air conditioning, power steering, disc brakes and fold-down rear seat, it is accompanied by a substantial documentation folder and supporting paperwork.

A second 1968 Camaro SS also joins the catalogue, alongside a genuine Rallye-edition 1972 Dodge Challenger 340 V8, providing buyers with further opportunities across the highly sought-after late-1960s and early-1970s American muscle market.

For those seeking something with serious visual impact, the catalogue includes an extensively customised 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air 468 V8. Powered by a hand-built fuel-injected 468ci big-block V8, the no-expense-spared build features a custom chassis, four-wheel Wilwood disc brakes, coil-over front suspension, nine-inch LSD, Boyd Coddington forged wheels, power steering, air conditioning and a highly detailed custom interior. Finished in three-layer Pearl Cream, it represents a very different interpretation of one of the most instantly recognisable shapes in American motoring.

Another American icon on offer is a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback Coupe 289 V8 Auto, adding the unmistakable first-generation Mustang Fastback profile to an already diverse catalogue of American collector vehicles.

The auction also extends into traditional prestige and classic motoring, with offerings from Rolls-Royce, Packard and other significant marques.

Among them is a 1958 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud Series I, powered by its 4.9-litre straight-six and finished in white with tan trim. Held by the same owner for more than 30 years and continuously registered on its original Victorian registration plates during that ownership, the Silver Cloud offers buyers an opportunity to secure one of the defining British luxury cars of the post-war era.

A particularly interesting pre-war offering is a 1941 Packard One-Twenty Club Coupe. Sold new in Los Angeles in May 1941 and later discovered in Arizona, the Packard underwent an extensive ten-year ground-up, body-off restoration in Australia. Finished in its original burgundy and cream colours and powered by Packard’s straight-eight engine, it comes with a history file, workshop and body manuals, sales brochure and spare parts.

Motorcycle enthusiasts are also well catered for, with the August/September catalogue bringing together an eclectic selection of British, European and other collectable machines.

Leading the motorcycle offering is a 1948 Norton International, representing one of the most celebrated sporting names in British motorcycle history. The International’s competition-derived engineering and Norton pedigree give it considerable appeal among collectors of post-war British motorcycles.

It is joined by a Triumph Tiger 110, being offered UNRESERVED from a private Victorian collection as part of a deceased estate. Other motorcycle highlights include a Ducati 750 SS, Triumph Bonneville, Triumph Trident, BSA 650 Thunderbolt, Matchless, 1950 Nimbus Model C and Royal Enfield.

The October catalogue brings together another impressive selection of Australian muscle and collector cars, American V8s, European classics, motorcycles, motoring memorabilia and enthusiast vehicles across three big nights.

Australian Muscle Takes Centre Stage

October is a particularly strong offering for Australian muscle enthusiasts, led by an impressive selection of Holden Monaros, Toranas and performance Commodores.

Among the headline vehicles is a 1968 Holden HK Monaro GTS 327 Type 2 V8 Manual, one of only 283 Type 2 HK 327 Monaros built. Finished in Warwick Yellow, it has been held by its current owner since June 1984 and comes with extensive supporting paperwork and provenance.

Joining it is a genuine 1970 Holden LC GTR XU-1 Torana, finished in Rally Red and retaining all original identification tags, along with a 1970 Holden HT Monaro GTS 350 with an extraordinary two-owner history and painstaking restoration.

Another standout is a genuine 1977 Holden LX Torana SS Hatch, factory ordered with the 308 V8 and four-speed manual, while the Commodore era is represented by an ex-Victoria Police 1985 VK Commodore SL V8 and a remarkably low-kilometre 2017 VF Motorsport Edition Build No. 0577/1200, showing just 4,937km and being offered UNRESERVED.

Ford enthusiasts haven’t been forgotten either, with a 1975 Ford XB Falcon Coupe John Goss Special joining the Night 1 line-up. A genuine two-owner example, it has undergone a no-expense-spared restoration and is currently powered by an enhanced XY GT-spec 351 Cleveland V8, with its fully rebuilt original matching-numbers 302 V8 block supplied with the vehicle.

Adding even more depth to the Holden line-up are a 1969 Holden HT Monaro GTS 308 V8 Manual Coupe and 1974 Holden HQ Monaro GTS 308 V8 Manual, with both being offered UNRESERVED.

American Muscle, European Classics & Something Different

October delivers plenty of variety, headed by a genuine 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T 440 WS23L Coupe. Representing the inaugural year of Dodge’s R/T designation, the Coronet combines genuine factory R/T pedigree with a rebuilt 440ci big-block V8 and extensive refurbishment.

For European classic enthusiasts, a particularly interesting offering is a 1975 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Roadster, held by the same owner from 1975 until 2026. Purchased new from Mackintosh Motors in Frankston, it remains largely original and comes with its original owner’s manual, service book and purchase receipt.

Also joining the mix is 2002 Bullet SS Build No. 1 – an Australian hand-built V8 manual roadster originally retained as the personal car of the company’s founder. Powered by a Lexus 1UZ-FE 4.0-litre V8, the car has previously been magazine featured, including by Just Cars.

An Austin Healey, Bentley T2, Cadillac Eldorado, BMW Z3, Ford FPV GT-P and Mercedes-Benz 420SEL are among the other classic and prestige vehicles adding further variety to the catalogue.

Motorcycles and memorabilia also form part of the October offering, with entries including a 1942 Harley-Davidson, 1972 Bultaco Matador 250, Honda Mini Trail and Yamaha 100.

The July catalogue brings together an exceptional selection of Australian muscle, blue-chip collector vehicles, American and European performance cars, vintage and collectable motorcycles and motoring memorabilia, with standout opportunities spanning more than a century of motoring history.

Leading the catalogue is an outstanding line-up of highly sought-after Australian performance and collector cars, including a genuine 1977 Holden LX A9X Torana SLR5000 Sedan finished in the highly desirable Flamenco Red. One of only 305 A9X SLR5000 sedans produced, this all-matching-numbers example has undergone an extensive top-end restoration and is supported by significant documentation, including a Holden Production Report and A9X Torana Club Vehicle Description Data. With just 2,639 kilometres showing since the engine build and restoration, it represents a rare opportunity to secure one of the most revered cars in Australian motoring history.

Another major Holden and HSV highlight is a 2017 HSV GTSR W1, Build Number 166 of just 275 produced. Powered by the formidable supercharged 6.2-litre LS9 V8 and paired with a six-speed manual transmission, the W1 represents the pinnacle of Australian production car performance. Finished in the striking Light My Fire and showing just 5,405 kilometres, this one-owner example is being offered UNRESERVED.

The Holden performance offering continues with an early-build 1988 HSV VL SS Group A Walkinshaw, Build Number 037. Highly original and matching numbers, the Panorama Silver example is accompanied by its original books and authenticity certificate and represents one of Australia’s most recognisable and collectable homologation-era performance cars.

Ford collectors are equally well catered for, with a remarkable selection spanning the formative years of Australian muscle through to the final chapter of local Ford manufacturing.

A genuine matching-numbers 1967 Ford Falcon XR GT finished in iconic GT Gold leads the early Ford offering. Recognised as the original Australian muscle car and forever linked to Ford’s outright victory at the 1967 Bathurst 500, this outstanding example is supported by an ACCHS Report and was awarded Silver in the Original Contemporary class at the 2023 GT Nationals.

Joining it is an exceptional 1972 Ford XA GT Falcon Coupe finished in factory Red Pepper. A beautifully preserved matching-numbers 351 V8 manual example, the car remained with its original owner for more than 40 years and retains significant documentation, including its original owner’s manual and dealer purchase receipt.

The Ford GT line-up continues with two outstanding XB GT Hardtops, including a matching-numbers 1975 example finished in Yellow Blaze (UNRESERVED) and an extensively restored 1974 Apollo Blue example. The latter is a 1 of 1 custom-specification vehicle according to its ACCHS report and has undergone a painstaking nut-and-bolt restoration.

Also joining the line-up is a genuine 1978 Ford XC Falcon Cobra, Build Number 089 – also UNRESERVED. Powered by its matching-numbers 351 V8 and featuring factory air conditioning, power steering and power windows, this exceptionally preserved survivor presents a rare opportunity for serious Ford collectors.

At the other end of the Australian manufacturing story is an extraordinary 2016 Ford Falcon XR6 Sprint – Build Number 500 of 500. The final XR6 Sprint produced for the Australian market, the Winter White example has travelled just 40 kilometres, has never been registered and has spent its life as a display vehicle. As the ultimate farewell to the iconic turbocharged Barra-powered Falcon, it represents a significant piece of Australian automotive history.

The July catalogue also delivers serious American performance. Highlights include a 2007 Shelby GT500 Super Snake, a 2011 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 SVT, a 1967 Ford Mustang GT Fastback and a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat SRT powered by its supercharged 6.2-litre V8.

European and British collectors are also presented with several standout opportunities, led by a 1968 Aston Martin DBS Vantage 4.0-litre Manual Coupe and a 1989 Aston Martin Virage V8. A near-new 2021 Jaguar F-Type R adds modern supercar performance to the catalogue, with its 5.0-litre supercharged V8, all-wheel drive and just 9,894 kilometres showing.

The catalogue extends well beyond the headline muscle and performance cars, with an eclectic selection including a 1966 Chevrolet C2 Corvette Stingray, 1934 engineered Ford Hot Rod, 1974 Volkswagen Kombi, 1982 Mazda RX-7, classic Ford Thunderbirds, vintage Model As, British sports cars and numerous other collector vehicles.

Motorcycle enthusiasts are particularly well catered for in July, with an exceptional line-up spanning early American motorcycling history through to landmark Japanese and British machines.

Leading the motorcycle offering is an ultra-rare 1922 Henderson Deluxe powered by its imposing 1,301cc four-cylinder engine. Henderson remains one of the most charismatic names in American motorcycling history, and this restored, running example is fitted with a Corbin police speedometer. With its rarity, engineering significance and international collector appeal, it represents one of the standout motorcycle opportunities to come through Burns & Co.

The Trevor & Kerry Hargreaves Collection – a remarkable multi-part auction, now entering its next chapter with Burns & Co

Some collections begin with a single item. For Trevor Hargreaves, it began in childhood.

An only child for many years, Trevor says his mother first encouraged him to collect cigarette packets. From there, the habit of collecting never really left him. Over decades, that early fascination grew into an extraordinary and deeply personal collection shaped by family, service, travel and memory.

Now, that lifetime of collecting is being brought to market through Burns & Co as The Trevor & Kerry Hargreaves Collection – a significant multi-part unreserved auction.

Parts 1 and 2 have already been successfully offered, following the full Burns & Co process of collecting, transporting, cataloguing and presenting the items for auction.

This week in Yarrawonga, the Burns & Co team returned to Trevor and Kerry’s property to begin the next stage – carefully loading the remaining items for Parts 3 and 4 onto trucks for transport back to our Bayswater facility.

With a dedicated team onsite, the collection is being handled with meticulous care and attention to detail, as each item is carefully packed, secured and prepared for transport. From there, it will be returned to Bayswater where every piece will be individually catalogued, photographed and prepared for auction.

Watching the process unfold on site, it was clear that collections of this scale are not just built over a lifetime – they also require significant expertise and coordination behind the scenes to bring them to market properly.

And this is no ordinary collection.

Parts 1 and 2 featured an impressive selection of enamel and screen-print signs across a wide range of categories. The upcoming parts continue to reveal the depth of the Hargreaves collection, including vintage tools, blacksmith equipment, farming items, framed advertising, militaria and household pieces.

It is, as our team described it, very much “an old collection” – built over many years, with items you simply don’t see come to genuine public auction.

But what stood out most during our visit was that this collection is about far more than the items themselves.

Behind every piece is a story.

Trevor’s life has been shaped by country life, family, military service and community. Called up for Vietnam, he served during a defining chapter of his life and returned home with memories that remain an important part of his story today.

There is also a strong family thread running throughout. Trevor’s parents both served during the Second World War, and together Trevor and Kerry have built a life centred around family, hard work and years of travelling Australia – often stopping at antique stores and country towns along the way, adding one more piece to the collection.

For Kerry, that meant years of travelling alongside Trevor and making room for each new find. For Trevor, it meant building a collection that reflects a lifetime of experiences.

When the time came to sell, the decision was both practical and considered.

Rather than leaving a large collection for family to manage in the future, Trevor chose to pass it on now – allowing others to enjoy the pieces while also supporting his family through the proceeds.
